The New Concave

Well I finally got my hands on a 43” Cassette Concave, damn was that fun. I had never wakeskated before, so it took a couple pulls before I could really maneuver the thing, but after I got down the basics, I had a blast. The concave is made of a 15 ply wood core that is machined to a concaved deck, allowing for a skate like ride. The ‘Concave’ will hit stores in about mid December and available in 3 different sizes. The ‘Super 8’, ‘Projector’, and ‘Reel to Reel’ round out the new Cassette Concave (3D) line available in sizes ranging from 40” to 43”. They are expected to sell for about 200 smacks. If a wakeskate is not a part of your boat arsenal, I would definitely suggest picking one up as they are easy and fun to play around with when you’ve hit a stop in your wakeboarding day. I would definitely suggest picking up a copy of this new wakeskate if you don’t yet have one, and I would at least try it out if you already have a cassette.

New Balance 135 & 140

The Balance is the newest of the Liquid Force lineup shipping with a 6-fin configuration and comes in both 135cm and 140cm models. I had a chance to ride the 135 flavor and I was instantly impressed with the new .6” cupped fins on the side of the board. These fins generated an amazing amount of hold and there was only a 1.2” fin down the center. It had amazing edge control, yet the board still broke away easy for spins and slides. Landing was softer than I would have expected, and although I would ride a bigger board (my standard ride is a Double Up Wright 143), I still felt very comfortable on this smaller 135. A new pair of large EXO bindings connected me to this ride and I have to say that this was an absolutely sweet combination.

This board is great for a rider with a skill level ranging from advanced beginner to expert! The cupped side fins allow for ultra aggressive edges yet still allow the board to be broken away with ease. It is a very light ride with a thin tail and sharp rails making a wicked combination for spinning and inverts. I would recommend this board to anyone looking to upgrade their older model to the bleeding edge of wakeboarding technology or to anyone looking for something a little different.

Recap

The Concave wakeskate should be hitting stores by late 2001, early 2002 and will be available in 3 sizes for a couple hundred bucks. The Concave revolutionizes the ‘wood core’ wakeskate industry by giving a more skate like appearance and feel to the performance and stability you get from a wood skate. With grip tape standard, you’ll probably want to pick up a pair of shoes for your wakeskating excursions. The Balance will debut in early 2002 in two different sizes and colors. Expect to pay roughly $400 - $500 if you are an early adopter and 20% less if you can wait until the summer before you upgrade. To add to the ‘extra bad ass’ ride the Balance provides be sure to check out a new pair of EXO suctions which will add style, comfort, and performance to an already sweet deck. Expect to pay about 300 bucks for a new pair of EXOs- and expect to be impressed.
