This year Liquid Force unveils their newest version of the ultra in two new colors guaranteed to sell. They now come in gray and blue, slightly different from the yellow and red of the 2002 season. But colors are not the only things that changed with these top quality bindings. The new X-Ray overlay allows for maximum stretch with 100% rebound. One of the first things you’ll notice about these is that the overlay feels and looks totally different.
The inner lining of the binding is a bit softer compared to the slightly more abrasive ’02 line, which ads to the overall comfort of the binding. The 2003 Ultras weigh in at a couple pounds each, and as stated above come in a couple different flavors. They are available in sizes S – XXL, so they should fit just about anyone’s feet. Now combine this with the larger foot bed & easily adjustable hardware that now comes standard on virtually every Liquid Force binding, and you have a solid contender.
So how does this binding stack up against others that I have ridden?
’02 HL Parks Bindings: $430
’03 LF Ultras: $270
Less expensive bindings that don’t rip after 2 months: Priceless.
Were the Parks bindings good bindings? Yes. Are the Ultras good bindings? Yes. Are Hyperlite bindings the only ones that break? No. Will either of these bindings make you a better rider? No, unless you are still rocking some ‘wake sandals’. The bottom line here is that the new Liquid Force Ultra Suction line is a solid value for your dollar, whether you are a Hyperlite, CWB, Nice, or even Solbound fan, I suggest you give these new bindings a run for their money.
But how do they perform? Like a champ! The soft foot bed uses special ‘memory foam’ to soften those landings when for you throw your indy backside off-axis fives, or those rare occasions when you case the wake on your (switch) toeside nines. In this top tier binding, hardware locks are included, and will come in a variety of colors. For stance options, the standard Liquid force base plate will allow you to have a parallel stance to a straight up stanky Watson stance if you so choose.
My favorite part about this binding is the level of ankle support it gives you. I prefer this style wrap to many other bindings I’ve ridden as it allows me to tweak and shift my body around the board, yet still remains to properly connect me the ride. In conclusion, these 2003 Ultras look, ride, and feel great! At $267 retail and a $230-$250ish street price they won’t hurt your pocket book too badly to get into an ’03 product.
So what could be improved to make these bindings truly stand out? The only thing I can think of is a more sturdy, less flexing base plate. Most binding flex comes from very aggressive or larger riders, and can usually be fixed for a couple bucks by getting a plate stiffener. Other than that, I don’t think I could be happier with this binding.
