Wakeboarding Unleashed!

From Shaba games comes a new twist to console gaming systems. Wakeboarding. That’s right, now what was once every wakeboarder’s dream is now a reality. Published by Activision, Wakeboarding Unleashed features some of the best riders today including the man that helped with many hours of the game play development, Shaun Murray.

As the game boots up you get a nice little video preview of each rider which seem to be all excerpts from other somewhat new videos. The copy I got was for a PS2, and I understand that the XBOX will also have this game available if it isn’t already. As far as the graphics go, they are solid. The first ‘training level’ is the delta, and I find that especially amusing as I’ve spent many a day riding the dirty butter water found at the delta.

Pretty soon you’ll notice the soundtrack, and you may, as I did, think what the heck is going on. Hahahaha, it was at this point I was wishing I was using an XBOX so I could just load up some of my favorite mp3s and assign them to levels. I guess it wasn’t too horrible, but I wasn’t into it to say that least.

The game play and controls are decent, but things start to get interesting when you throw a heelside crowmobe- wow, haven’t seen that before. But if you look at it from a video game standpoint, it is still pretty fun. The grinds and combo methods are much like that of Tony Hawk where you can manual in and out of other tricks.

One thing I would have liked to see was more points given to spins. As a HS 9 is worth like 700 points, and when you do an ‘inverted raley’ you get a couple thousand. Then again it’s just a video game, so do the tricks that get you the most points.

So here is the wrap up. If you are a hardcore wakeboarder looking for a game that mimics how tricks are thrown, and some sort of realism, this isn’t the game for you. But if you are a die hard wakeboarder looking for a video game to play that is based on the sport you love, you’ve found your match. This video game, based on the THPS engine is years ahead of those old games that you’ve seen around, Burs Trick Wakeboarding anyone?

Go check it out, and see what you think.
