Numb Skull Productions - Revolution Review and interview

Numb Skull's newest flick is due to hit the streets, and you won't be dissapointed. With the majority filmed in both Washington and Oregon the backdrops are always impressive along with the riding and editing. Featuring a lot of grass roots west coast tallent and the occasional pro it's a damn good stab at what a wake video should be. The Cardoza boys kill it and so does the east coast import Sean O'Brien. From big spins to nuclear glides, Numb Skull finds a way to fit just about every trick in and about every style imagineable.

But why trust me? WakePics.com had a chance to interview with the creator of Revolution and here is what he had to say...

Who are you? - My name is Ron Mart

What's your deal? - Well, just a regular dude, a regular OLD dude. Yikes, I'm almost 40, I've got a regular job, a way cool wife and an awesome 3 year old son. We're into all boardsports, skate, snow and of course wake.

How long you been editing? - I've been editing for 5 years, but I've only spent the last 3 trying to do it "professionally", HA!

Why the northwest? - You kidding?, this is IT man. Really this is where we live and we feel very lucky to be here. We get great wakeboarding from April to late September and great snowboarding from November to late May. It's only about 90 minutes from my driveway to the mountain and only about 10 minutes from driveway to boat launch. It's a bit surprising but, the wake scene up here is pretty damn big.

West coast flow, or east coast throw? - Gotta be....West coast flow, no doubt. No disrespect intended to our east coast brothers but c'mon...big, slow, floaty and grabbed always wins in my book. By the way, even though Sean Obrien is a Florida kid, he's got tons of West Coast Flow.

Tell me a little bit about Numb Skull. - Well, NumbSkull has fluctuated a bit but the core has always been me. I've got some good support from Jared Schassen and Jason McDaniel as well. I came up with the name as a big joke, but it sort of stuck. I started out just filming me and my buddies with a crap camera and then making litlle home movies. I started to get good at it and made a few connections and thought about trying to put out a DVD. I spent some cash to upgrade all my equipment and software and gave it a run.

It's been a few small steps towards getting a better finished product on the screen but we've made good progress. We're getting some good response from industry people and riders and making even bigger connections for the next film.

What is new in Revolution? - We've really made a big step up in the riding, editing and overall production and presentation. Sean Obrien's section is just killer, look for his wake to wake TS-Slob-9. Ricky G's section is super-smooth. Nick and Mike Cardoza, those kids progressed so much in just one season. They both added at least six new major tricks to what they already had a year earlier.

Ronnie Cafferky's section came out just the way I saw it in my head as I listened to the music. I'm really digging that one.

How long did it take you guys to edit Revolution, and what equipment do you use? - It took about a year to edit, but it could have gone a little quicker. I decided to add two new sections about a month before our target release date so that pushed it out longer and at 59 minutes long it is JAM PACKED with all riding footage, no filler, I wanted to take my time and make it right. We're using a Sony VX2000 and two smaller Sony TRV9s, just a regular PC and editing with Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, Audition and Encore.

Is Ron Cafferky really that mad? - HAHA!! That's hilarious. The answer is, yes and no. Ronnie came to me with that song and the idea that he wanted to show how he was mellow off the water and...."not mellow" on the water. The song and the edit of his section really goes with who Ronnie is when he's on the water. I will say that some of that was a bit exaggerated, I came up with some of the shots, set them up and he was a good "actor". He's a very cool guy....most of the time.

Any sponsors or shoutouts you'd like to give? - Yes, Active WaterSports, CDI Fins, Insane Terrain Clothing, Straight Line, Liquid Charge, Big thanks to Rachel and VAS Distribution, My wife Kerrie and my little ripper son, A.J. Also a big shoutout to Chris Ramey, thanks for creating Wakepics.
