The 2006 Zeus, by CWB

In 2003 CWB introduced the Zeus. In 2005 they updated it. In 2006 they mastered it. “From the company that brought you Lycra liners, heel cups, achilles pads and has always delivered the best fit and function, comes a line that will change the way you look at boot technology.” But who cares what the marketing geniuses have to say, these suckers work. The look is smooth, the weight is light, and the comfort is top notch.

The Hinge
The first thing you will notice about the 2006 CWB Zeus bindings is the ingenious way the heel piece slides away from the front of the boot, to provide ease of entry. This development, the first on the market, uses mechanical advantage to make your life easier. Perfect. Slide your foot in, pull up the hinge, and BANG you are done. No more trying to weasel your foot into bindings with gobs of lube just to have them cramp up in ten minutes.

Comfort
The hinge allows a perfect fit with adjustable cables to match each rider’s foot. Like previous Zeus models, they incorporate a heel retention strap, locking your heel in place. The newest model also incorporates molded plastic lace straps which don’t break, and two lace points maintain the ability to adjust upper and lower support based on your own personal preference-a feature that is, and should be, included in all high end bindings. The foot bed is also updated from the 2005 models and is more like the ones from 2003, a plus in my book. A lycra-lined toe keeps your feet comfy, and molded achilles pads keep your foot in check.

Performance
There were two very distinguishable differences I noticed when riding these slick new boots. First and foremost was the amazing amount of heel ‘lock’ and support the bindings provided. In my experience they were much more supportive than previous models, something of which I am quite a fan. The second most notable thing was the overall comfort of the binding. Usually the first time I wear a new set of digs I get a bit cramped up, but there was no problem here. I was stoked.

The Scoop
CWB stepped it up last year with their revision of the Zeus, but this year they outdid themselves. With the revised foot bed, the modified binding plate, and most importantly the all new Hinge technology, CWB has made solid performance upgrades to the already legendary boot. Is it worth the upgrade? Well, that can be a tough decision, but if you aren’t running at least a 2005 model, this would be an excellent upgrade to your setup. The comfort, the performance, the technology and the price are right- for about $350 you can pick up a copy at your local board shop and you won’t be disappointed.
