As the only free standing Professional-level wakeboard competition in the Southern Hemisphere, the Australian Open is set to showcase the world’s elite, from Australia’s best to international superstars. Taking place on the beautiful Shoalhaven River, located south of Sydney on November 17 and 18, the event has already generated a lot of excitement throughout the community.
The Nowra community is a blend of rural, surf and city. Self sufficient and self-supporting, Nowra is known for the community, media and business support of its events. It is the venue of Australia’s premier Wakeboard School, run by Sanders and his family and will soon be known as the wakeboard capital of Australia.
Up until now wakeboard events have been based around a competitive atmosphere, but times are changing and so is this sport. The Australian Open is set to be the start of the revolution of Australian Wakeboarding and this event will have a totally different feel. The day will be jam packed with action and entertainment from start to finish both on and off the water, including wakeboarding, live bands, freestyle moto-cross and a carnival atmosphere.
Attracting the best riders and the most dedicated fans, the Australian Open offers the ultimate sport and lifestyle weekend.
The Open will also be the first true free ride contest in Australia. Expect a new format, with new rules, new judging criteria and new obstacles. Sliders, ramps and rails will be used along with our tournament tow-boat for a completely new style of contest. As the World Wakeboard Association’s first event down under, it will surely raise the bar for wakeboard contests around the world.
Entry to this professional event is open to all wakeboarders around the world, with the qualifying rounds to take place on November 17th. An invited list of the world’s top riders will be ushered into the second round to face the challenge of the successful qualifiers. Entry fee is A $100 and must be received by November 1st to avoid a late fee. Assistance with accommodation and travel in Australia can be arranged.
